A crown is a surface cap that encases the entire tooth, thus restoring it to its original shape and size. Crowns protect the tooth and strengthen its structure; no other type of restoration is able to do this. At Two Cities Dental, our dentists have placed 1000’s of dental crowns and bridges.

A dental crown is designed to cover the visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth. Crowns can help restore teeth affected by significant decay, fractures, large fillings, or other structural concerns. Porcelain and other tooth-colored materials can provide a natural-looking appearance that blends with the surrounding teeth.
A crown procedure typically involves preparing the tooth, taking an impression or digital scan, and placing a temporary restoration while the permanent crown is being prepared. At the final appointment, your dentist will check the fit, shape, and bite before securing the permanent crown.
Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A traditional bridge generally uses crowns placed on the teeth next to the gap to support an artificial replacement tooth. Depending on your oral health and treatment goals, other options such as dentures or dental implants may also be considered.

Modern dental crowns and bridges can be designed to closely match the color, shape, and appearance of your natural teeth. The final appearance depends on the restoration material, the condition of your surrounding teeth, and your individual treatment plan.
Your dentist can help you choose an appropriate restoration and shade to create a natural-looking result.
The lifespan of a dental crown or bridge varies depending on the material, oral hygiene, bite, lifestyle habits, and overall dental health. With proper care, many restorations can provide reliable service for years, but they may eventually need repair or replacement.
Brushing twice daily, flossing around your restoration, attending regular dental cleanings, and avoiding habits that can damage your teeth can help support the longevity of your crown or bridge.
Crown treatment usually begins with an examination and preparation of the affected tooth. Your dentist removes the damaged portion and shapes the tooth so there is enough space for the crown. An impression or digital scan is then used to create a restoration that fits your tooth and bite.
A temporary crown may be placed while the permanent crown is being prepared. At the final appointment, the dentist removes the temporary restoration, checks the permanent crown, and securely bonds it into place.
Older crowns may need to be replaced if they are cracked, worn, loose, damaged, or no longer provide a proper fit. Changes in the surrounding teeth or gums may also affect the appearance or function of an older restoration.
If your existing crown is several years old or you have noticed sensitivity, discomfort, damage, or changes in appearance, our dental team can examine it and discuss whether replacement is appropriate.
While most patients can enjoy a normal diet after a bridge is fully placed, very hard or sticky foods may put unnecessary stress on the restoration. Hard candies, ice, and other foods that require excessive force may increase the risk of damage.
Good oral hygiene is also important. Your dentist can show you how to clean underneath and around your bridge to help keep the supporting teeth and gums healthy.
Temporary crowns are designed to protect your prepared tooth while the permanent restoration is being made, but they are generally less durable than the final crown. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could loosen or damage the temporary crown.
It is also helpful to chew on the opposite side when possible and avoid sticky candy, gum, caramel, taffy, and similar foods until your permanent crown has been placed.
