A routine dental cleaning is a simple preventive appointment designed to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. Your visit typically begins with an examination of your mouth. Our dental team will check for plaque buildup, cavities, gum inflammation, and other potential oral health concerns.

Next, plaque and hardened tartar are carefully removed from around your teeth and along the gumline using professional dental instruments. Your teeth are then polished to help remove surface stains and leave them feeling clean and smooth. Flossing may also be performed to remove remaining plaque and debris between your teeth.

Depending on your oral health needs, we may recommend dental X-rays, a fluoride treatment, or additional evaluation. You will also receive personalized advice about brushing, flossing, and daily oral hygiene. Routine cleanings are generally comfortable and help support long-term preventive dental care.

What to expect from a routine cleaning

Prevention is key to a healthier, whiter smile.

Before your cleaning begins, our dental team will review your dental and medical history, especially if you are a new patient or if there have been changes in your health, medications, allergies, or other important conditions.

We also encourage you to tell us about any dental concerns or anxiety you may have. Understanding your needs allows our team to provide more personalized and comfortable care. If you feel nervous about dental treatment, ask us about our dental comfort aids and available options to help you feel more at ease.

After reviewing your health history, our dental team will begin your professional teeth cleaning. We carefully remove plaque and tartar that have accumulated above and around the gumline, followed by flossing between the teeth to remove remaining plaque and food particles.

Your teeth are then polished using professional dental equipment and polishing paste. Polishing helps remove surface residue and stains while leaving your teeth feeling clean and smooth.

For patients who need additional preventive care, we may also recommend a customized cleaning schedule or other treatment based on their oral health.

After your teeth have been cleaned, our dental team will examine your teeth and gums for signs of potential problems. We look for cavities, gum inflammation, areas of sensitivity, damaged teeth, and other changes that may require attention.

Your gums may also be evaluated for signs of periodontal problems. If further evaluation is needed, we may recommend dental X-rays or another appropriate examination.

Regular examinations and professional cleanings can help identify dental concerns early and support a healthier smile over time.

Generally used during longer medical procedures, the patient will be in a deep sleep the entire time and shortly afterward.
